Devil's Spring

How far would you go for your family?

Financial struggles have forced Grace Rockwell, along with her husband and their baby daughter, back to the family homestead. Luckily, the move to the Morgan Horse Farm isn’t all bad. Her sister Portia is there with her toddler son, and Grace soon finds a way to improve their finances—by entering riding competitions with her family’s gorgeous horses.

But the homecoming takes a horrific turn when the babies are abducted, sending both new mothers on a frantic search with few leads.

Lollie Belvedere didn’t plan to kill her husband. Nor did she know her adopted children would turn out to be kidnapping victims. But something in her snaps the day she’s forced to return the babies to their mothers—and now she’ll do whatever it takes to get them back.

Devil Spring Bittersweet Hollow Book 3 eBook Aaron Lazar

Having read—and loved—the first two books in the Bittersweet Hollow Trilogy (Devil's Lake and Devil's Creek), by Aaron Paul Lazar, I picked up Devil's Spring with great anticipation. I wasn't disappointed! I've become very attached to Portia, Grace, and all of the other family members.

In Devil's Spring, Portia's son and Grace's daughter are taken by a mentally unbalanced woman intent on making them her own children. While child abduction can be an uncomfortable subject for any of us who are parents and grandparents, Lazar has the skill and sensitivity make you feel the family's anguish, while at the same time making you feel just as determined as the family to get their children back.

Lazar intersperses numerous side stories in with the main action that help to round out the book beautifully, including an unexpected story of new found love.

The Bittersweet Hollow Trilogy was my introduction to Aaron Paul Lazar, but I plan to read all of his series. So nice to find an author whose books you can't put down, and then to find that he has many more!

Devil Spring Bittersweet Hollow Book 3 eBook Aaron Lazar Reviews

One of the many things I can always count on with an Aaron Lazar book is a truly emotional experience, one that never starts off at a slow pace, but rather jumps right into heart thumping suspense. In Devil’s Spring, the third instalment in the Bittersweet Hollow series, the prologue has us rushing to the hospital alongside Anderson and Grace Rockwell. Grace is a week overdue with their first child and is suffering from toxemia, leading to fear of a possible emergency C-section. Right off the bat, I was part of the family once again, my heart in my throat worrying for the safety of mother and baby. It was like I had never left them at the end of the second book because everything and everyone was still so familiar. However, sometimes my aging brain needs a refresher on some of the back story, so having a concise summary of the plot of the previous book nicely woven throughout the first few pages made everything seem like it just happened yesterday. Anderson and Grace end up with a healthy baby girl, Caroline, a cousin to Grace’s nephew, Joey, who is the one-year-old son of Grace’s sister, Portia, and her husband, Boone Hawke.

Jump ahead one year, and the plot becomes very relatable to a great many readers as all of the characters are fighting financial difficulties. Another common thread in Lazar’s books is the deep sense of family, especially in times of trouble. It doesn’t matter what happens, Grace, Portia, and their families are always there for each other, providing unconditional love and support in times of struggle. Boone and Portia already live with her parents on their horse farm, Bittersweet Hollow, and when their bills grow beyond their means, Grace and Anderson move back home as well. Daisy and Dirk would do anything to help their daughters, even as they struggle themselves with financial and health issues, and the same goes for Boone’s parents who live close by as well.

Obviously, the bond of family is strong, but when the safety of family is threatened, that bond becomes even tighter. When Caroline and Joey are abducted, the panic and terror just pours off the pages, like a river raging out of control, causing my heart to pound and my eyes to fill with tears. As the family and the FBI searched for the little ones, I sat on the edge of my seat wishing I could jump into the book and help. Being the reader, you feel frustrated because you know what they don’t and you feel powerless. When the family was eventually reunited with the babies, my heart swelled with happiness, but being only halfway through the book, I knew not to get too comfortable. As readers of this series know, this family is like a magnet to trouble, and every time you think the roller coaster ride is over and your heart has settled to a normal rate, you are hurled over the edge once again. However, in typical Lazar style, the ride always ends happily and safely, and once again I closed the book with a satisfied sigh and a smile. In the world we live in today, it feels good when everything turns out ok.

I can assure you that there is never a dull moment in this book, but it is not only the plot that makes this story so compelling. It’s the diverse collection of well developed, complex characters that cause the reader to lose themselves in the story so completely. Lazar is adept at creating characters who leap right off the page, some who we grow to love and others who we can’t help but be frustrated by or even despise. Whichever the case, each one is fascinating, and the relationships they develop along the way are what help to move the plot along to its conclusion. Without all of these wonderful characters, the plot would fall flat.

I received an advanced copy of this book for free for an honest review.

To book one and book three I couldn't put them down till I finished reading both were well written with love of both family's that pull together.
Devil's Spring by Aaron Paul Lazar is the third book in the Bittersweet Hollow Series. These are mystery novels with a strong undercurrent of love and family. And I love this family. I love the details and emotions that are given, like insights into my own soap opera. The story line is well planned, consistent and compelling. As with all Lazar novels, this one swept me up, and left me with a hangover of the most wonderful kind. An HEA that I can get behind, for everyone.
